Average Rating :

Rating : - Terrible piece of garbage
After many years of faithful use from a Lexmark that cost me practically nothing, I decided to "upgrade" to an EPSON Workforce 500 all-in-one so I could combine my scanning and printing capability in the same equipment. BIG MISTAKE! The Epson is worthless!

First, the Epson can not print onto paper that has already been hole-punched. So there's no ability to print journal entries, forms for a personal organizer, ledgers, etc.

Second, though customer service insists it can do two-sided printing, I've never been able to get it to do so, and have to manually break pages in Word and then request printing one page at a time.

Third, the ink is used up quickly. It won't let you print when any of the cartridges are used up; so even if you have black ink and switch to black ink only, you still can't complete a print job without going to the store and replacing a color cartridge.

Fourth, it believes the ink is used up when it's not. The ink clearing function is inadequate, using alot of ink but not resetting the ink replacement setting (which means you just use up the ink you have and still can't resume printing without replacing unused cartridges)

Obviously, EPSON makes its money not by selling good printers but rather selling lots of ink. When it thinks ink is low, the printer software keeps displaying an annoying extra screen trying to get you to buy EPSON ink directly from EPSON online (which, by the way is way overpriced -- you can even get it cheaper retail)

As far as scanning function goes, it doesn't function well. The scans are extremely poor optical quality. The automatic document feed sensor is lousy -- it leaves much of a stack of scanning to be re-entered and then you have to use another software (like adobe) to merge the several files into one document.

It's keyboard panel is confusing, its help screen is useless.

It's photo function is a joke as it freaks out and won't accept any paper other than 20 lb 8 and 1/2 by 11.

It's not only 10 times the cost of a simple ink printer; it's 10 times the headache. Stick to a simple ink printer (and not an Epson) and just buy a simple scanner with document feed. The combo will cost you less and cause less frustration Epson America Epson WorkForce 500 - multifunction ( fax / copier / printer / scanner ) ( color ) PRINTER, WORKFORCE 500, ALL-IN-ONE,
